Rehabilitation Centre] organization catering to the needs of children and young adults with disabilities like Polio, Cerebral Palsy, Mental Retardation, Speech and Hearing Impairment, Visual Impairment and other Developmental Disabilities. This centre, which is one of the programs of the Church of South India, Madurai-Ramnad Diocese, serves every differently abled person irrespective of personality, background, religion, caste and physical appearance as it believes that every person has a right to live and to make practical choices to grow.organization catering to the needs of children and young adults with disabilities like Polio, Cerebral Palsy, Mental Retardation, Speech and Hearing Impairment, Visual Impairment and other Developmental Disabilities. This centre, which is one of the programs of the Church of South India, Madurai-Ramnad Diocese, serves every differently abled person irrespective of personality, background, religion, caste and physical appearance as it believes that every person has a right to live and to make practical choices to grow.

All the children come from very low economic background – children of single parents, widows, and destitute women or below poverty line. All services like education, uniforms, food, medical facilities transport, mobility aids, hearing aids and learning aids for the blind are provided free of cost.

The programs of Polio Home, Orthotic workshop and Pre-School program for Visually, Speech and Hearing Impaired children are carried out in partnership with cbm (Formerly Christoffel BlindenMission, Germany) and the Diagnostic Day Care Centre interventions are carried out in partnership with Bethania Ministries, U.S.A.

The aims and objectives of the centre is to offer appropriate services both in community based and campus centered settings for education, vocational training, resettlement and rehabilitation of disabled children and adults in Kodaikanal hills area.

POLIO RESIDENTIAL HOME

Started in 1992, the aims and objectives of this Polio Residential Home are

  • To provide physically handicapped polio children in the Kodai hills irrespective of caste and religion an
    environment with love, care
  • To understand their needs
  • To overcome the psychological barriers and inculcate in them self confidence to enable them to feel
    equal with normal children.
  • To offer appropriate services for their education, physical and medical needs.
  • To create awareness in the community on the need to provide opportunities for disabled children,
    for their development and integration with normal children-socially educationally and occupationally.

The Polio Home that started only for Polio children now houses children with speech and Hearing impairment and Visual impairment also. The Polio Home is managed in partnership with the Sisters of St.Anne’s. Thiruchirappalli, South India. The children are taught to discover their life roles in life through Honesty as their first priority and Faith, Hope and Love as their top priorities.

DIAGNOSTIC DAY CARE CENTRE

On every working day the fully loaded school vans arrive in the centre at 9am sharp.54 children are picked up from their homes in the morning and they are in the centre for various interventions till 4pm.The fully content and happy students are dropped back home by the school van in the evening. All these 54 children have various types of disabilities like Cerebral Palsy, Mental Retardation, Downs Syndrome, Visual Impairment, Speech and Hearing Impairments and other Developmental Disorders.

WHERE IN THE CENTRE DO THEY GO FOR INTERVENTIONS?

SPECIAL EDUCATION CLASSROOM :

11 students with CP and MR in the age group of 5-10 go into this classroom. They are given special education according to their performance level and that includes academics, social, pre-vocational and self help skills including activities of daily living.

SPEECH THERAPY :

Some students come to speech therapy department. Giving equal importance to communications, this department provides speech therapy for better speaking skills. Thus get the language skills improved considerably. To express themselves in a better way regular vocal exercises are also imparted.

SSA & IED: ‘EDUCATION FOR ALL :

Is an inclusive education program specially designed by the Government of India for differently abled children. Called Sarva Siksha Abhyan, this primary education program focuses on integrating differently abled children with non disabled normal children and they all together learn in a normal school classroom.19 students go to this C.S.I. Town Middle School as part of this program.

PHYSICAL THERAPY :

The physical therapy department is equipped with therapy equipment and qualified therapist who provides physical therapy to children with physical disabilities. Therapy is given to strengthen the muscle power, improve mobility and to reduce pain and deformities. All the children who need therapy come to this unit in turns from their respective class rooms for their individual sessions.

RECREATION & LEISURE :

The students are taken out to the parks in Kodaikanal, take part in cultural programs to develop their social and inter personal skills. They are given an opportunity to learn about plants animals and environment by exposing them to various medium of learning.

EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITES :

The children are exposed to arts and crafts, sports, games and music to bring out their hidden talents and develop them.

VOCATIONAL TRAINING

24 young adults in the age group of 14-18 years get into the work skills unit and split into 4 groups to get their inputs in skill training in 4 projects namely 1. Leaf ware 2.Papier Maché 3.Paper Bags 4.Paper cups.

Going in line with “NO PLASTIC IN KODAI” theme all these projects are designed to prove that people with disabilities also can contribute towards the aim and objective of saving Kodai Hills from pollution and perishing. The skill training is aimed towards employment and economic independence of the students in future. The work skills that they learn here in these units will enable them to work in any vocation. Many of the senior young adults are given monthly stipend and all have substantial bank balance!

WHAT DO THESE 4 PROJECTS MEAN?

LEAF WARE:

This beautiful eco-friendly, biodegradable and disposable tableware comes in different choices of size and shape and are a boon to the hotel industry as well as the picnickers. This project is a result of a long time research with the cooperation of the scientists at the food and technology institute, Government of India, is ideally suited for people with disabilities. With paper as underlay these leaf plates, saucers and cups are leak proof and are molded in heated machines at high temperature and simultaneously sterilized and cut young adults are forever busy in producing these exquisite table ware and there is a never ending demand from cafes and hotels.

PRE SCHOOL

Pre School section is where Hearing and Speech impaired children and Visually impaired children attend to get their educational inputs. All of them attend the normal school as part of SSA and come for special inputs to our centre.

SPEECH & HEARING SECTION

12 children attend the CSI Town Middle School under the SSA program. Reinforcing sessions in language is separately attended to in this section. Wherever remedial sessions are needed, the special educators in this section attend to that also. Speech training and auditory training, speech stimulation, lip reading, sign language interpretation and extra curricular activities are also tutored here. All the students undergo audiogram testing and hearing aids according to the test results is provided and quality education imparted to them.

ORTHOTIC WORKSHOP

Our Orthotic workshop has a trained Ortho Technician (trained at Mobility India, Bangalore) who makes all Orthotic appliances for the needs of people with physical disabilities. The workshop is fully equipped to produce low cost, lightweight calipers and other appliances like splints, crutches, walkers etc. using Polypropylene and light aluminum bars and joints. The advantage of using these types of appliances is that they can be worn with any kind of shoes or sandals and they also can enter places of worship where foot wear is not allowed. We have provision to take casts, measurement, oven and all other required tools for making them. Repair works for calipers, other appliances and wheelchairs are also done in this unit. This unit caters to all the students in our centre and also to the public in general.
