Fostering Comprehension and Writing Skills in the mainstream classroom

A Three-Day International Workshop by Dr. R. Malatesha Joshi, Dr. Suzanne Carreker

Date : October 9th, 10th & 11th 2014 in Mumbai

Read 2014 : Reading fluently underpins all academic activity and is the strongest predictor of academic success for most students. Children learn to read through the Primary years and subsequently read to access information on science, social studies, economics……. Yet, School Teachers receive little training in the teaching of reading beyond phonics and there are few, if any, courses at the University level to train reading specialists or reading instructors.

Following the overwhelming response to READ 2011, 2012 & 2013, this workshop will focus on building students’ comprehension and writing skills, offering a range of new strategies for building competencies in the general classroom as well as intervention for those who struggle to acquire these crucial skills

The Faculty:

R. Malatesha Joshi, Ph.D., is Professor of Reading/Language Arts Education, ESL, and Educational Psychology at Texas A&M University and visiting faculty at the TAMU-QU Collaborative Programme at the University of Qatar, Doha. Dr Joshi is the Founding Editor of Reading and Writing: An Interdisciplinary Journal, rated one of the top ten journals in education, as also of Literacy Studies: Perspectives from Cognitive Neurosciences, Linguistics, Psychology, and Education. He has authored and co-authored numerous books on literacy acquisition and instruction including Becoming a Professional Reading Teacher, and sits on the editorial boards of several professional journals.

Suzanne Carreker, Ph.D., CALT-QI is Vice-President of Research and Programme Development at Neuhaus Education Centre, Houston. She has published and presented widely and is best known for her work on developing instructional materials to teach various components of literacy acquisition.
