Agro based Training for persons with mental retardation above 18 years form rural background
National Institute for the Mentally Handicapped is a registered society established in the year 1984 as an autonomous body under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India. The institute is an apex body having tripartite functions of training, research and services in the field of mental retardation in the country. Since last 30 years, the institute has been making striking advances in building capacities to empower persons with mental retardation and their families.
The need to impart agro based training:
According to the information available from the Census 2011, there are about 16 lakhs persons with Intellectual Disabilities in our country. Out of this, about 75% are living in rural areas where the predominant employment scope is agriculture and agro based industries. Therefore NIMH is planning to start an agro based work unit to provide systematic training to persons with intellectual disability mainly to the persons living in rural areas.
Initial plans for agro based employable skills
- Horticultural activities
- Vegetable cultivation: creepers and non creepers
- Nursery
- Vermi compost preparation
Apart from the above need based agro based training will also be considered
Training location
The agro based training unit will start in the campus of NIMH, Secunderabad, along with Independent living skill training
Boarding & lodging
Boarding and Lodging will be provided in the campus of NIMH
Fees
Training fee will be as per the approved tariff based on the socio-economic status of the individuals (details give n at Annexure – B [download pdf])
A minimum fee of Rs.300/ – per month will be charged for the boarding and lodging facilities
Eligibility
Persons with intellectual disability above 18 years from rural background Preferably from families whose children are engaged in agro based works
Duration of the Training
Three months for one selected skill
No. of seats–Ten (10)
Post Training status
Parents/Guardians to take the responsibility for placing/employing their wards at their respective locations
