Arivalayam – is a school with a difference. It all began when the plight of a three year old child in a pre-primary school in BHEL Township came to the notice of the Management of the giant Public Sector Organisation Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited. The child was always seen isolated from the group and made no attempt to join in the fun and frolic of the other children. On further probing it was found that there were a number of such children in and around Township who required special education. The result was the establishment of Arivalayam in 1977 – A School for the Mentally Challenged children by the management of BHEL with technical support from CBM – Christophel Blinden Mission of Germany.

Yoga:
All students practice yoga daily. This improves motor coordination, concentration, teaches adaptive behavior and improves general health.
Games:
Students play indoor and outdoor games and participate in inter school competitions which are held every year. Every year the students of Arivalayam win awards at the District level competition.
Music:
Students are taught devotional songs and keerthanas by a popular Carnatic Music exponent.
Competitions:
Fancy dress, painting singing, sports and craft work competitions are held and prizes awarded. Students are also rewarded for regular attendance, cleanliness, academic skills and regular progress.
Computer Lab:
The computer lab equipped with six computers has been established. This helps the students to play games and improve their hand eye co-ordination and finger dexterity.
Park:
Arivalayam has a children’s park within its premises for the use of the children. It also includes a playground with a collection of rides like swing, see-saw, merry-go-round, round about, which are fully occupied by the busy kids during their play-time.
