The objective of the Scheme is to provide financial assistance to the differently-abled students to enable them to pursue professional or technical courses from recognized institutes and get employed/self-employed.
Soroptimist International of Chennai has been conducting Interschool Oratorical Contests exclusively for students with Learning Disabilities as an annual feature since 2003. Students of some of the city’s special schools have been participating in the contest. The aim of the contest is to encourage students with Learning Disabilities to participate in such activity, since such opportunity is otherwise not available to them.
It gives an opportunity for them to share their experiences of fighting discrimination and learn about the new UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and their human rights.

The applicants should be 18 years and should have the National Handicapped Identity Card. They could produce the course certificate for 2011-12 personally to the Differently Abled Welfare Office at DMS Compound, Teynampet, Chennai, before August 9, says an official release here.
This is in line with the new guidelines of the State government with regard to differently abled welfare facilitation. According to the department of differently abled welfare, those seeking new national identity cards or renewal of old identity cards are entitled to apply with required proofs of residence, family card, electoral identity card, bank pass book, along with two passport-size photographs.
The school was started in June 2003 with 20 special children with disabilities like- Autism, downs syndrome, mental retardation, learning difficulties, cerebral palsy and others.
