RADHA ROY, a wheelchair user, the other singer to perform with AR Rahman at the Awards, greeted me with a shy smile. She was clearly overwhelmed by the fact that she was going to share the stage with Mr. Rahman and was breathless with excitement! As she sang a song from the movie “Kyun Ki” I was captivated by her beautiful voice. No wonder Mr. Rahman had a special word of praise for Radha. Here’s my tête-à-tête with her.

In the medical model, management of the disability is aimed at a “cure,” or the individual’s adjustment and behavioral change that would lead to an “almost-cure” or effective cure. In the medical model, medical care is viewed as the main issue, and at the political level, the principal response is that of modifying or reforming healthcare policy.
Disabled or disability sports are played by persons with a disability, including physical and intellectual disabilities. Many of these are based on existing sports but modified to meet the needs of persons with a disabilities, they are also referred to as adapted sports. However, not all disabled sports are adapted, several sports that have been specifically created for persons with a disability have no equivalent in able-bodied sports.
Those concerned with the education of differently abled children are worried about the World Bank report which has come down rather heavily on the quality of education in schools in India saying students are not able to even read and do subtraction

The main point of contention of the disability rights lobby is that while the GO has allowed certification of disability by doctors, including those in Primary Health Centres, practically, persons with disabilities are required to turn up at the State Resource and Training Centre to obtain their certificate. Different days have been allotted to different disabilities and depending on the nature of their disability, the applications have to present themselves at the venue.
The All India Institute of Speech and Hearing (AIISH) here will continue to issue hearing disability certificates in prescribed formats following a direction from the office of the Director General of Health Services, Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
