Differently abled or disability is defined as limitation of a person’s ability to carry out the activities of daily living, to the extent that he or she may need help in doing so. The American Disabilities Act of 1990 defines disability, as ‘physical or a mental impairment that substantially limits one or more of life abilities’.
Technology has come to the aid of people with disabilities, thanks to the ingenuity of university students whose gadgets, soon to go on view at i-CREATe 2011, could help bridge gaps in their communication with other people and enable them to do their daily chores on their own. i-CREATe stands for International Convention for Rehabilitation Engineering & Assistive Technology, and it is being organised by the National Electronics and Computer Technology Centre (Nectec) with cooperation from the Singapore-based Therapeutic, Assistive & Rehabilitative Technology Centre.
I am a mother of 5.5 years old kid who was diagnosed with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) at the age of 3.5. For a parent this diagnosis overwhelming and many could feel devastated. And the accompanying technical explanations could be very confusing. But I have overcome these stages, found out ways to overcome some disadvantages my kid has owing to this disability. I feel the explanations and definition for ASD are inadequate to a parent of kid with autism as to what to do. Hence, according to me ASD is some developmental delays, socializing constraints together with some sensory issues. Please note, I am saying delays, constraints and issues.
There are several apps available geared toward people with special needs/ communication issues, as well as those geared towards babies/toddlers/prek that work well for kids with special needs. I have the iPod Touch and iPad, so I’m always on the look out for apps my kids can use.
