The high-tech devices can be tried out at the offices of the York Blind And Partially Sighted Society, which has also announced it has won a £30,000 grant.

Aria is a braille notetaker with speech output designed for use by persons who are blind or have low vision. This computerized organizer is designed with word processing, mathematical and communicating capabilities. The user can construct full-fledged documents, transfer files, drive a modem or use a statistical calculator. With DOS interface, this device can run external software. It can be upgraded; the system runs on 1 Megabyte of RAM and 2 Megabytes of Flash ROM (contains the Aria software).

Text-To-Speech (TTS) synthesis system, this new software will hit the market in November. Sponsored by the Centre’s department of Information Technology, TTS is a screen-reading software application that identifies and interprets Indian language text being displayed on the screen. Unlike former screen-reading software such as Jobs Access With Speech (JAWS) that only reads English text on the screen, TTS can read Marathi, Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam and Bengali.

The Ministry of Railways has decided to extend facility of concession in rail fare to completely blind persons and mentally retarded persons in Rajdhani and Shatabdi trains. The concession for both the categories would be 25 per cent in 3rd AC and AC Chair Car in Rajdhani and Shatabdi trains. Same concession will also be admissible to one escort accompanying such person.
