The Clarke School for the Deaf was founded in the year 1970 which was a dream initially started in a modest way in a small rented house and today has grown into a fully functional State Board affiliated school as well as an internationally recognized Institute serving persons with disabilities in various aspects.
Clarke School for the Deaf, the Intellectually Disabled and the Deafblind Multi Handicapped is one of the very few schools in India to usher in a new era of educational, vocational and cultural rehabilitation of such children.
The success story of the Clarke School is one of dedication and determination of the founders, ably assisted by a team of eminent personnel from diverse backgrounds along with the Staff who have stood against all odds to develop the school to higher heights.
Unit for children with Hearing Impairment (HI)
Has academic education from preschool to higher secondary along with vocational training in areas like computer education.

- Academic education using the oral aural approach
- Classes from pre school to Higher Secondary in English and Tamil (regional language)

Unit for children with Intellectual Challenges (MR)
Provides special education programs tailored for various levels of retardation along with speech therapy, occupational therapy and physiotherapy to name a few.

Special Education Courses
The Clarke School has fulltime Teacher Training Programs recognized by the Rehabilitation Council of India.
- Diploma in Special Education Hearing Impaired-DSE (HI)
The Clarke School started its first Teacher Training Programme in Hearing Impairment in the year 1980 but we got RCI recognition to run the course from 1991 with affiliation to NIHH and more recently with Manipal University. It is a two year course and till today 380 educators have received training to teach the Hearing Impaired.
- Diploma in Special Education Mental Retardation- DSE (MR)
The Clarke School received recognition from RCI to run the Diploma in Special Education (DSE-Mental Retardation) with affiliation to NIMH (National Institute for Mentally Handicapped) in the year 1995 and now with Manipal University . It is a two year course and till today 100 educators have received training to teach the Mentally Retarded.
- Diploma in Special Education Deafblindness – DSE(Db)
In the year 2002 the school started the RCI recognized Diploma course in Deafblind (DSE-Deafblind), making ours the second such centre providing this training. It’s a one year course and we have trained around 85 special educators for the deafblind.
- B Ed Special Education (Hearing Impairment)
The School was selected as a study centre for Distant Education Programme for the Bachelor’s degree in special education B Ed (H.I) under Bhoj University and also by Tamilnadu Open University. Every year nearly 50 professionals are being trained under this programme.
The school organizes short term course of three months as well as workshops in Professional Development from time to time.
Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA)
The Clarke School is the implementing agency for the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) – “Education for all”, a Govt. of India Programme. Currently, we are the Implementing Agency for 12 Blocks in Villupuram District. Every block has special educators trained by us to cater to various disabilities and every four blocks has a physiotherapist. A day care centre is also maintained as per the norms of SSA.
Existing schools with inadequate teacher strength are provided with additional teachers, while the capacity of existing teachers is being strengthened by extensive training, grants for developing teaching-learning materials and strengthening of the academic support structure at a cluster, block and district level.
