Worthy of emulation:M. Muruganandham has overcome his disability to become an automobile mechanic.
M. Muruganandham has been coming to the Government Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine (GIRM) at K.K. Nagar here from Pollachi for 12 years to replace his prosthetic limb. He has had his prosthesis changed eight times so far.
The 25-year-old youth lost his right leg in a wall collapse on a rainy night when he was 12. Doctors at Coimbatore amputated his leg and sent him to Chennai for fitting a prosthetic limb.
His parents are casual labourers and he is the first in his family to receive formal education.
After the accident, he had to forego school for several months but the gritty youngster was determined to do something in his life and not depend on charity.
After Class X, he pursued a diploma in automobile technology from a polytechnic college in Pollachi. He is now a mechanic at a motorcycle dealer outlet in his hometown.
Muruganandham has been using his prosthetic foot extensively. He also rides motorcycles. “This is my eighth foot,” he says of his prosthesis. “I can sit and squat on the ground when I repair motorcycles with my artificial leg.”
