The number of children may appear small. However, our objective is to mainstream these children who would otherwise go uncared for and ignored ( differently abled – persons with disability ) by the society
Here is no gold medal winner, Abhinav Bindra. Nor, cricket World Cup winner, Mahindra Singh Dhoni. There may be die-hard fans for these sportsmen, but, Ramandeep Kaur — gold and bronze medal winner in World Special Summer Olympic Games (WSSOG), 2011 in Athens Greece, can bring tears of happiness to her parents and teachers.
This 18-year-old differently-abled girl of Ambuja Manovikas Kendra (AMK), Ropar, was not watched by the countrymen when she upheld country’s flag high among hundreds of nations in Athens. But her mother remembered Kaur in her supplications when she was running for the nation.
Kaur struggled in every stride of her life from learning alphabets of English to become a world renowned athlete. She doesn’t want to promote any commercial brand. This gold medal winner wants to go home to help her mother in cooking. “I want to go home to help my mummy,” she said on sidelines of felicitation programme organised for the four differently-abled medal winners by Ambuja Cement Foundation (AFC).
Four students from AMK, Ashish John, Harbinder Kumar, Gurcharan Singh and Ramandeep Kaur have won seven medals at the recently concluded WSSOG.
Ramandeep Kaur, the only girl in the AMK team, won the gold with her India teammates in the 4 x 100 m relay race, and grabbed a Bronze in shot put.
Harbinder Kumar, the ace shuttler, won a silver medal in badminton singles, a silver in Badminton Mixed Doubles, and a bronze in Badminton Doubles.
Gurcharan Singh won a bronze in the 15 km cycling road race, while Ashish John won gold in Basketball.
The WSSOG, 2011, were held from June 25 to July 4, and saw a participation of 7500 athletes from 180 countries, competing in 22 different sports categories.
While felicitating the four heroes for their participation in Special Olympics, chief secretary, Punjab SC Agrawal, “State Government will provide every support to the differently-abled children to make them productive members of the society.”
Chairman Emeritus of Ambuja Cements Limited, Suresh Neotia, said, “The State of Punjab is today proud of you and your institute for your sterling performance in the international tournament.”
He said, “The school made special efforts to enhance these children’s skills through intensive training on the field as well as to infuse a competitive spirit in them. Ambuja Cement Foundation has been deeply involved with the local communities at 19 locations across the country with the view to Engage, Involve and Energise them. AMK has an impressive history of participation in challenging games such as State Championships for over 5 years.”
