The Special Olympics Bharat Tamil Nadu is organizing a National Coaching Camp for the Intellectually Disabled in Badminton. This event will be a platform for their final selection to represent India in Athens, Greece in forthcoming summer Olympics. This National Coaching Camp is being organized at the St. Joseph’s Engineering College premises in association with them. This National Camp will be inaugurated on Thursday the 29th of July 2010 at 11.00 A.M. Minister for Social Welfare, Government of Tamilnadu Mrs. Geetha Jeevan will be the chief guest. Mr. S. Ve. Sekhar well known stage Artist and MLA will participate in the presence of Dr. B. Babu Manoharan Director, St. Joseph’s Engineering College, Chennai 119 and Area Director Special Olympics Bharat Tamilnadu ADSN Prasad.
This National is expected to attract more than 400 intellectually disabled athletes and coaches from various parts of the country such as Goa, Maharastra, Andra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Pudhucherry and Tamilnadu. The entire event is supported by Special Olympics Bharat with considerable inputs from the hosts.
The Special Olympics movement was started on 20july 1968 at Illinois. It was founded by Eunice Kennedy Shriver sister of Late President John F Kennedy. Then she invited 35 boys and girls with intellectual disabilities to Camp Shriver at Maryland. From just 35 children today the movement has become global with 3.5 million athletes spread over 180 countries all around the world.
Special Olympics movement in India for the mentally disabled was established in1988 and the Special Olympics Bharat (SOB) was formed under the leadership of Air Marshall (Retired) Denzil Kheelor in 2001. This national body is accredited by the Special Olympics International as the National Special Olympics program for India. The Special Olympics Bharat was authorized to train 2 million mentally Disabled Children. The strength of athletes grew over 500 thousand and coaches to 25 thousand.
Special Olympics Bharat Tamil Nadu is the official and accredited body of the National Special Olympics Bharat and recognized by the government of Indian ministry of sports and youth affairs as a federation for sports for the intellectually disabled. The Special Olympics Bharat has within a year has grown from 300 athletes to nearly 20,000 athletes in its coverage and it is the aim of this State Body is to cover all the 2 Million mentally disabled children in Tamil Nadu.
The athletes’ oath of the Special Olympics is as follows,
“Let me win, but if I cannot win
Let me be brave in the attempt”
Persons eligible for Special Olympics are children and adults with intellectually disabilities who are 8 years of age or older.
The Special Olympics movement offers training and competition for the mentally handicapped in the following sports events.
