Ali Yavar Jung National Institute for the Hearing Handicapped is an autonomous Institute in the field of Hearing Handicapped rehabilitation in India. It 
was started in 1983 under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, to serve people with hearing handicap through various activities.
The institute and its regional centres provide comprehensive diagnostic, therapeutic, educational and vocational services to the hearing and speech impaired. An interdisciplinary team consisting of audiologists, speech pathologists, special educators, psychologists, social workers, ENT specialists, pediatricians and neurologists attempt to maintain a high standard of rehabilitation services.
The services are as follows:
- Evaluation and diagnosis of hearing and speech – language impairment.
- Selection and fitting of hearing aids and ear moulds.
- Certification hearing disability.
- Educational evaluation and guidance to parents.
- Vocational counseling, training and placement.
- Speech and language therapy.
- Psychotherapy, behaviour therapy and play therapy.
- Medical consultation and guidance.
- Referral and follow–up services.
- Parent Infant Programme and pre–school services.
- National Open School–Special Accredited Institution for Education of the Disabled.
- Parents’ guidance and counseling.
- Outreach and extension services
- Material development, distribution and guidance through correspondence.
- Information documentation and dissemination services.
- Technical guidance to various agencies.
The institute provides the best possible services in terms of evaluation, therapeutic treatment and hearing aid fitment. The institute provides free services for persons with hearing handicap whose monthly income is below Rs. 5000/-. The beneficiaries can take prior appointment, if they desire. Patients are advised to bring their monthly income certificate from the Tahasildar, MP, MLA, Municipal Counsellor, Sarpanch, and Employer. As the evaluation process may take 2/3 days, and due to non-availability of sufficient accommodation at the institute, patients have to make their own arrangement to stay at Mumbai.
Training Programmes
Top priority is given to training since well–developed manpower is one of the most important prerequisites for better networking of the services. It is through training that a cadre of highly specialized professionals, as well as grass–root level personnel are created to meet the needs of persons with hearing handicap.
To meet this need, the Institute conducts several long–term and short–term training programmes at AYJNIHH, Mumbai and its Regional Centres at New Delhi, Kolkata, Secunderabad and Bhubaneshwar.
Long Term Training Programmes Accredited By RCI Are As Follows:
- Diploma in Hearing, Language and Speech (DHLS) at New Delhi and Kolkata.
- Diploma in Special Education (Hearing Impaired) at various centres.
- Bachelor of Education (Hearing Impaired) at Mumbai.
- Bachelor of Special Education at Secunderabad.
- Bachelor of Education (Hearing Handicapped) at Kolkata.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Audiology and Speech Language Pathology at Mumbai.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Hearing, Language and Speech at Secunderabad.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Audiology and Speech Rehabilitation at Kolkata.
- Master’s Degree in Audiology and Speech Language Pathology at Mumbai.
- Master of Education (Hearing Impaired) at Mumbai.
Programms Accredited by state goverments are:
- Certificate Course in DTP at Mumbai.
- Certificate Course in Information Technology for Hearing Handicapped at Mumbai and Kolkata.
Short Term Training Programes:
This includes workshops, seminars and refresher courses designed to update and develop professional practices and skills. These programmes also train grass-root level personnel such as Anganwadi workers, Health workers etc. and parents to participate in community based rehabilitation for the persons with hearing handicap in India.
In–House Training Programes:
- Certificate Course in Ear Mould making at various centres.
- Certificate Course in Hearing Air repair at various centres.
- Certificate Course in Sign Language Interpretation at Mumbai.
The Institute collects course fees for RCI accredited long terms training programmes. In order to promote academic excellence, merit cum means scholarship to pursue M.Phi./Ph.D programmes are being given.
