F.A.M.E India, Bangalore proposes to conduct a Oral Sensory and Motor Stimulation- A two Day Workshop. This highly interactive and participative course will include case studies, group discussions, video films, practical counseling skills, role plays and personal coaching on interpersonal skills. Highly qualified faculty will facilitate this workshop.

This workshop is based on a technique known as Oral Placement Therapy, developed by Sara Rosenfeld-Johnson (owner of Talk Tools®), around 40 years ago. It is an innovative tactile sensory approach where therapy tools are used to train the muscle movements for improved feeding safety and speech clarity. As part of this training, we will talk about how the motor and sensory components of the oral musculature directly impact speech and feeding.

Additionally, participants will learn how developmentally appropriate motor movements for feeding and speech can be therapeutically targeted using highly motivating techniques appropriate for children and adults. Each activity can be implemented easily within the school and/or home environment. OPT is an important addition to traditional speech treatment methods for clients with placement and movement deficits. It is a tactile- proprioceptive teaching technique which accompanies traditional therapy.

Unlike other traditional methods of “Look at me and say what I say”, OPT looks at adding the tactile stimuli to teach placement of the oral structures. OPT uses a variety of ‘Therapy Tools’ like Horns, Bubbles, Straws, Jaw Grading Bite Blocks, Chewy Tubes, ARK Grabbers, etc. in a hierarchical and structured manner to help children improve skill levels by maximizing all the sensory systems.

Training Group: Special Educators, Mainstream school teachers, Psychologists, Social Workers, Speech Therapists, Physiotherapists and other Rehabilitation professionals.

Goal: The goal of this workshop is to provide a conceptually sound framework of knowledge, skills and attitude for supporting Children with oral and sensory problems in Special School/Inclusive School setups.

Training Objectives :

On conclusion of the workshop, the Participants will be able to

• Identify oral sensory-motor problems that impact feeding, speech, and mouth function in children with autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, and other developmental disorders.
• Understand the need for dissociation and grading for feeding and speech .
• Apply general oral massage for appropriate populations (e.g., children with oral defensiveness, oral awareness problems, tonic bite, hyper-responsive gag, etc.).
• Apply feeding techniques that can be safely taught to parents and care providers.
• Learn to use Oral Placement Therapy (OPT) techniques as a tactile cueing system in conjunction with traditional speech therapy techniques to improve speech clarity.
