Cleft Lip and palate is a congenital condition that occurs very early in pregnancy between the fourth and eighth week of gestation. the most common associated problems with CLP are feeding difficulties, ear infections, dental anomalies, psycho social disturbances, hearing problems and delay in speech and language development. The incidence of CLP in India is estimated approximately one in 500 live births and every year 35,000 children are born with cleft lip and or palate. The associated problems exhibited by individuals with CLP are heterogeneous in nature. The management of these individuals requires a team work consisting of plastic surgeon, speech language pathologist, orthodontist, audiologist, psychologist and prosthodontist.
The rehabilitation is initiated with the surgical correction with aims to restore the orofacial structures. In order to correct functional aspect, speech-language pathologists play an important role after primary and secondary surgical correction. Hence it is essential to understand the importance of interdisciplinary work in rehabilitation of persons with CLP. The proposed workshop is aimed to create the awareness regarding assessment and rehabilitation through interdisciplinary approach.
