SAARC Seminar on Independent Living of Persons with Intellectual Disability

SAARC Seminar on Independent Living of Persons with Intellectual Disability: Life Cycle Approach

Need for a life span service delivery system

SAARC Seminar on Independent Living of Persons with Intellectual Disability: Life Cycle ApproachThe persons with Intellectual disability have cognitive impairment which arises at birth or in early childhood which continues into adulthood. This condition leads to the need for support from another person in the areas of higher functioning (decision making, money management) or for support for basic activities of daily living (eating, toileting, dressing). A person with an intellectual disability will require lifelong support and assistance with basic living and/or functional activities at varying levels depending on individual needs, age, health, lifestyle preferences and living circumstances.

Therefore, a need was felt to have a common platform to discuss on the life cycle approach to meet the needs of the persons with intellectual disability from early intervention to senior citizens status by inviting the experts and policy makers from the SAARC countries. The presentations and discussions will have a wider perspective from the point of view of life cycle approach. The topics are spread out from early intervention to well being of senior citizens. The experts from the concerned areas will be invited for presentations. Sub areas have been worked out and given in the brochure. The participants will have ample opportunity to share their views, experiences and research findings during discussions after every presentation
