A differently-abled woman is running a home for other struggling differently-abled women who were deserted by their family and friends with the motto ‘Service to man is service to God’.
Though, she has been getting help from government and Rotary Club she finds it difficult to run the home as it is not sufficient.
But, she has a determined vision to lift all the women in her home to a good societal status either through marriage or through good government job.
In a bid to realise her vision, she also helps the inmates to undergo training and attend various competitive exams.
The home which, was started in 2010 was registered formally in 2011 and now to attract funds from various quarters, a trust had also been formed in the same name. The donors are also exempted from tax under section 80c of IT Tax said Muthumari.
She says that when she was studying sixth standard at a special school at Palayamkottai she was inspired by the service of the Christian Nuns to the differently-abled and decided to serve women who are also differently-abled like her. Hence she decided to setup a home for such women and to take care of them, says Muthumari.
She also says that her home is not known to outside world and hence funds are not given sufficiently to take care of the inmates. But her aim is make the women economically independent by securing, says Muthumari.
Woman in the home are living together as a family and contribute to the home economically with their meager income says Muthumari. After coming to the home, no one wants to leave it. They leave only either after marriage or after getting a good job outside Thoothukudi claims Muthumari. So far, two women have left the home after the marriage and are leading a very good life, adds Muthumari.
Inmates of the home too were seen determined and say that they were treated better than their family. One of the inmates, Kanagavalli, studying second year MA in History at VOC College at Thoothukudi, says that she is treated well in the house and everyone behaves like a family.
She also says that her aim is to become a lecturer or to join a government job and she is determined to get the job. She has been working hard to secure a good job and to lead a better life to help differently-abled people like her, says Kanagavalli.
Along with other inmates, Muthumari also takes care of her mentally challenged sister, Mariammal. She plans to take care of more differently-abled women in the future and for that she is on the look for benevolent souls to support her endeavour.
