German Leprosy and TB Relief Association India [GLRA India], a Chennai based NGO partnered with National Institute for Empowerment of Persons with Multiple Disabilities [NIEPMD] that functions under Department of Disability Affairs, Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Government of India “To provide holistic rehabilitation Services to Persons with Disabilities especially Multiple Disabilities”.
Since March 2015, a Rehabilitation centre providing life skills training for multiple disabled persons is functioning at MGR Colony, Naduvankarai, Annanagar to enable the persons with multiple disabilities for a sustainable future.
This is the first skill training batch in tailoring. 20 Persons with Disability (PWDs) will benefit and pass out in 5 months. Classes start from May 2nd from 10 am to 4 pm from Monday to Friday. A special educator and a trained tailoring teacher will handle the students. Students will receive a stipend of Rs.2500 per month.
This facility was inaugurated on Thursday, 31st March 2016 at 3.30 pm at the centre. Some of the dignitaries present were Mr. R. Mohamed Zafrullah Community Development Officer, TNSCB, Dr. G. Srinivas, National Medical Advisor, GLRA India, Ms Sowmya Simhan, Founder Trustee, Sukriti Social Foundation, Ms. Daisy Srinivasan, Tailoring Trainer and others.
Mr Zafrullah in his motivating speech stated “Let us not call them differently abled but instead alternatively abled” Similar trainings are being initiated in Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan with GLRA India partners.
