Despite the disturbing fact that these children are unlike ordinary children, it is very much inspiring to see the confidence and determination in them. This puts them a level above.

At Swabodhini, we help empower and instill confidence in these tender minds. A humane cause we strive for consistently, to help these children live independently. Born in 1989 out of a deep passion to meet the special needs of 4 children, Swabodhini is now committed to serve and empower nearly 100 differently able children. The agonizing fact apart, this increase in the number of special children also explains the growing awareness among parents in accepting these little differences in their kids and seeking professional help.

Spread in a serene locality in Thiruvanmiyur, Chennai, India, our special school apart from teaching and training differently able children also provides occupational therapy. We believe that the warmth, love and encouragement these children experience here will bring out their hidden potential and help develop their personality.

Special education is an integral part of Swabodhini through which the
educational and social needs of the children are addressed. Special education is designed to ensure that students with disabilities are provided with the environment that allows them to be educated effectively. In order to qualify for special education a child must be diagnosed as having a disability and the disability must be found to “adversely affect educational performance” so as to require special services. Referral and evaluation for special education varies widely. A physician, a parent, a teacher can be a referral, for variety of standardized tests, to be done to evaluate the individual’s performance in skill areas. Accordingly, the child’s strengths and weakness are identified and an individualized educational plan (IEP) is drawn up. The IEP should be comprehensive and must include:
Current performance measures based on multiple tests and assessment methods
Short term and long term educational goals and objectives that define how problems will be addressed.
Definition of how the child’s progress will be measured on an ongoing basis.
Disciplinary methods{especially for children with emotional and behavioral issues}
An individualized health care plan {IHP}for students requiring special medical attention or medications

After the IEP is developed the student is placed in the appropriate educational setting or classroom. The students are divided into pre primary, primary, pre-vocational and vocational groups, according to their level of functioning and they are promoted to the next group as they progress. Special education in the classroom include support services like physical assistance and therapy, counseling and psychotherapy, modified learning environment, use of assistive learning device if necessary , educational and psychological assessments and behavioral management techniques
