Information on disability of individuals was collected during the Population Enumeration phase of Census 2011 through ‘Household Schedule’ . Similar information was collected during 2001 census also. Information for individuals residing in ‘Normal’, ‘Institutional’ and ‘Houseless’ households were collected.

As per Census 2001, there were 2.19 Crores (2.13% of the Population) persons with disabilities. The National Sample Survey Organization (NSSO) in its 58th rounds during July-December 2002, estimated that the number of persons with disabilities in India was 1.85 Crores (1.85% of Population).
According to the 58th round of the National Sample Survey (NSS) of 2002 External website that opens in a new window, there were 208 lakh persons with disabilities in 2002 (Report No. 485 at S.No. 88). The NSSO Survey indicates that seventy five per cent of persons with disabilities live in rural areas, 49 per cent of disabled population is literate and only 34 per cent are employed.
