Mental Retardation is a condition wherein a person has certain limitation or difficulty in mental functioning and skills such as language skills, writing Deaf Boysand social skill. These difficulties will cause the person to develop more slowly than the normal child. Mentally retarded children may take longer to speak, walk and take care of their personal needs like going to the bathroom and eating.
According to the definition by the American Association on Mental Retardation (AAMR), an individual is considered to have mental retardation based on the following three criteria: intellectual functioning level (IQ) is below 70-75; significant limitations exist in two or more adaptive skill areas; and the condition manifests before the age of 18
An intellectual disability should not be confused with a psychiatric disability or mental illness, although a person with an intellectual disability may also have a psychiatric disability.
