Ali Yavar Jung National Institute for the Hearing Handicapped is an autonomous Institute in the field of Hearing Handicapped rehabilitation in India. It was started in 1983 under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, to serve people with hearing handicap through various activities.

Educating the parents to educate the hearing impaired children

If the interaction between the parents and the child is proper and methodical, the hearing impaired child can start learning the vocabulary and develop language structures along with the development of communication skills easily,we may say rather spontaneously. These children have the same innate capacity to learn language as that of a hearing one. They shouldn’t be under estimated. But slow learning should be attributed to the fact that such children haven’t heard any language.

Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities

The main objectives of the National Trust are to enable and empower persons with disabilities to live as independently and as fully as possible, to extend support to registered organisations providing need based services, and to evolve procedure for appointment of legal guardians for persons with disabilities requiring such protection. The Government of India has provided Rs.100 crores toward the corpus of the Trust. The income generated from the corpus is utilized to implement its programmes.

The Nippon Foundation will provide full fellowships including tuitions, books, required assistive technology and other support services, to a small group of individuals with disabilities to pursue graduate studies (Master’s level) in Comparative and International Disability Policy (CIPD), beginning in August 2011 at the recently establishment Institute on Disability and Public Policy (IDPP) for the ASEAN region.
