The National Federation of the Blind came into existence in the year 1970 with the philosophy “Let the Blind Lead the Blind”. The objectives for which the Federation has been established include; to strive for equality of opportunity for the Blind in the field of Education, Training and Employment etc. The Federation is serving the blind community through its various Welfare programmes run by 51 branches and units through out the Country. LOTUS runs a hostel for the poor, blind girls who are pursuing their higher studies in various city colleges. All the inmates of the hostel hail from very poor families in the small towns and villages of Tamilnadu, who after completing their schooling have come to Chennai driven by their desire to pursue their higher studies.

The learning devices provided by Samrita Trust help visually handicapped students (hereafter referred as ‘blind students’) to study on their own, the subjects in their courses and perform better in examinations. The Trust is inspired by Louis Braille, inventor of Braille, and indomitable spirit of Helen Keller.

Give the visually imapired participants new experience of alternative photography, cultivate their inner creative abilities and to make exhibition quality photographs. Skills required for participants: Visually impaired should have basic knowledge of photography and has been taking pictures.
Her eyes are set on a goal ‘ making visually impaired self-reliant. On her noble journey, Jyoti Parmar, 45, has taught 30 such persons how to write their name. Besides, she has been teaching English and social studies since 18 years at Braille Bhawan, Jamalpur. And while treading this path, she has not let her handicap be a barrier ‘ she had lost her vision when she was eight.
