Tirupur school for the Deaf functions to enhance the quality of life for the hearing impaired members of the society who have special communication needs, through continuous special education, value based education and vocational programmes and services.
Theodeaf School has trained teachers. We provide different kinds of therapies and train our children to live in the mainstream with dignity and self sufficiency. The children are provided vocational training in skills such as tailoring, garment design and manufacture, gardening, agriculture, teaching and other skills. We also are trying to get computers and support for our children to learn computer skills that will greatly enhance their employability. The normal academic courses are also taught with appropriate and improvised teaching methods developed by the teachers. However, access to modern methods and equipment is desirable and we have been seeking support for these along with more training to our teachers.
Support a Children
All our children come from economically poor families from different districts of Tamil Nadu and neighboring states. The parents of almost all children are employed as daily wage earners and small scale farmers and hence it becomes very difficult for them to provide adequate facilities for their children. The majority of the children’s hearing condition is due to hereditary factors and due to poor nutrition since they were born besides lack of medical attention. Due to the genetic factor, at times you will see that more than 15 members of a single family enrolled in the school.
Tamil Nadu Govt. State Award
“State Award for best social worker” was awarded to Mr. Murugasamy who is the correspondent of our “Tirupur school for Deaf” by Deputy Chief Minister of Tamilnadu State Government, India. Our Correspndent and Theodeaf team very proud of this state award from our Tamil Nadu State Government.
Speach Theropy
The children learn to speak with a visible speech viewer. Our specially trained staff carefully structure programmes for the children based on limited technologies available with us to provide them with the knowledge and confidence in and outside the classroom.
Awareness Cultural Programmes
We conduct dance programmes in Local festivals especially in rural areas to raise awareness about speech and hearing impairment and to popularize the facilities in the school that are free of cost to all. For example our team members were shocked to discover a village with around 300 hearing impaired persons. We attempted to convince the villagers to send the children to our school but are yet to succeed.
