Workshop on PEERS Social Skills Training for Teenagers
Negotiating the social space and making friends remain a challenge for persons on the autism spectrum, even for those with excellent communication and cognitive skills. PEERS is the ONLY evidence-based social skills training programme that addresses this challenge. This intervention focuses on those in school experiencing social difficulties, particularly with respect to friendships.
Through video demonstrations, role-playing exercises, and didactic instruction the training will address several issues including –
- Developing appropriate conversational skills with peers
- Appropriately use electronic forms of communication
- Finding friends and choosing relevant social networks
- Use of humor and assess humor feedback
- Becoming a good sport during games and activities
- Handling arguments and disagreements with friends
- Dealing with teasing, bullying and rumors or gossip
- Improving reputation
Over the course of four days participants will –
- Learn about the friendship and social difficulties common to adolescents with autism spectrum disorder and other social challenges.
- Learn how to conduct group social skills training to adolescents and parents.
- Become familiar with the PEERS Treatment Manual and the research upon which it is founded.
- Be equipped with the tools to deliver PEERS at home or in community mental health, medical,
research, or educational settings.
Each participant will receive their own copy of the PEERS Manual for Teens worth INR 3500, extensive
handouts and PEERS research and clinical files which are included in the registration cost.
This is a first and unique opportunity to become a PEERS certified Trainer. PEERS certification is open to educators and professionals with a degree in the field of education, psychology, OT, PT, SLP, social work, medicine, or a related mental health field; Graduate students pursuing a master’s degree or higher in above mentioned fields; Graduates trained in autism with at least three years experience in working with people with autism. The training is open to others who will receive a certification of attendance. RCI registered professionals will receive CRE credits from the Rehabilitation Council of India.
