Indian Sign Language Weekend Course (Beginner Level)

Aim

ISLRTC’s objectives include promoting the use of Indian Sign Language among the general public. The weekend course provides an opportunity for people to develop basic ISL communicative skills.

Learners who have completed the ISL weekend course of beginner level would be able to understand ISL vocabulary used in common communicative situations, express themselves using basic sentence constructions and communicate in ISL in everyday situations.

Objective

The course objective is to enable learners to communicate with deaf people using basic ISL. Learners will develop skills in communicating with Deaf people using basic ISL on a range of topics that involve simple, everyday language use, and gain confidence in production and reception of ISL. The course will enable learners to participate in simple conversations in real
life.

Duration and Hours

The duration of the beginner level of the ISL course is 120 hours, distributed over 15 weekends, i.e. 30 days. The classes would be conducted on Saturdays and Sundays for 4 hours per day, i.e. 8 hours each weekend. Thus, the duration of the beginner level course would be approximately 4 months.

Number of batches

Two batches would be conducted in the following slots:
1) Batch I – Morning slot 9 am to 1.00 pm on Saturday and Sunday
2) Batch II – Afternoon slot 1.30 pm to 5.30 pm on Saturday and Sunday

Intake capacity

The intake capacity for one batch would be minimum 15 students and maximum 20 students. If less than 15 students register, the date of the start of the course may be postponed till the target of 15 students is achieved.

Eligibility

Any individual aged 18 years and above is eligible to apply for the weekend course.

Course Fee

The fees for the weekend course is Rs 6,000/- per student.

Admission process

Registration of students will be done on a first come basis.

Attendance

Students would be required to maintain minimum 75% attendance. In case of any short-fall of attendance due to unavoidable reasons, the decision will be taken by the Competent Authority considering the merits of the case.

Examination and certification

An exam may be conducted at the end of the course; however, the purpose of the exam would only be to inform the students of their progress and not for determining whether a student has successfully completed the course.

Successful completion of the course would be based only on the attendance. All students who successfully complete the course may be given a certificate of completion of beginner level of the ISL weekend course by ISLRTC.

Manpower Requirement

One Instructor-ISL would be required to conduct the classes on the weekends.

Infrastructure Requirement

One classroom with 20 chairs, computer, projector, screen, whiteboard, etc. would be required to conduct the classes.

CRE

It is planned to submit the proposal for the weekend course to RCI for granting of CRE points for rehabilitation professionals registered with RCI.
