The Unique Problems of Online Learning
Students have lot of challenges when interacting with online materials.
- The Navigation to get to the materials they need;
- The interaction with the material when they have arrived.
- Some course content was embedded in graphics images that she could not access using her text-to-speech system
- The most common barriers for students with acute visual impairment are unavailability of accessible websites, unavailability of accessible learning materials
- E-learning material not pre-recorded sign language interpreter videos or without captions/subtitles.
- Text accessible to learners that have colorblindness or low-contrast sensitivity, the font color not have sufficient contrast to be distinguishable from the background.
- Courses that rely heavily on charts, graphs and photos not alt-text, which allows a screen reader not able to convey important content, its inaccessible to learners with visual impairments.
- Access via keyboard (i.e., information and content be accessed using tabbing, arrow keys, enter/return buttons) difficult to navigated and read consistently by a screen reader and locomotor disabilities.
- Inaccessible class assignments and materials on the learning management system
- Inaccessible documents that are scanned images on webpages and websites
